Anyone watching Berto vs Ortiz?

I shrugged when this fight was made but for some reason I'm looking forward to it now. Ortiz might be mental but I give him a good chance. He knocks out big Berto and screams for the rematch with Floyd. Floyd never gave him the rematch.

Either way, if Ortiz wins or loses he should make the grudge match or televised parking lot fight against Brandon Rios.

Next for GGG: Thinking outside of the Box

In my opinion, Canelo-GGG will not happen, but if Khan upsets Canelo, a Khan fight could very well happen because Khan would go after the monster payday.

That aside, my thinking, which includes catch-weight match-ups, is that the best opposition for GGG right now is:

Danny Jacobs (31-1)
Billy Joe Saunders (23-0).
Chris Eubank Jr. (21-1)

And then:

Erislandy Lara
Winner of Willie Nelson vs. Demetrius Andrade

And these very long shots

Matt Korobov
Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam
Andy Lee
Avtandil Khurtsidze
Miguel Cotto
Sergio Mora

Can you add any?

Without A Near Equal Golovkin Must Continue Cleaning Out the Division

By Frank Lotierzo

Last week I wrote about heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz 25-0 (22), and how he may be too good for his own good. The focal point was that Ortiz, an efficient boxer-puncher, is too dangerous for any of the alphabet title-holders to defend their belts against because he's not well known nor does he have much of a following - which translates into short money fighting him, accompanied by a massive risk. Hopefully, before he ages too far beyond his 37 years, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua or Deontay Wilder will have to defend their belt against him.

Middleweight Gennady Golovkin 34-0 (31), who currently holds the IBO/IBF & WBA titles, is another outstanding fighter who seems to get better every time out. And like Ortiz, you can argue that Golovkin may be too good for his own good, only for different reasons. Ortiz's frustration stems from the fact that there are plenty of good heavyweight title holders around for him to challenge......the hurdle for him is trying to get one of them to face him. The opposite holds true for Golovkin, and that's because there's not much of a bench at 160. Both are in a tough predicament and their earning potential has been affected dramatically because of it.

Golovkin is considered the most lethal fighter in the middleweight division, a division that has historically been one of the deepest and most competitive in professional boxing. It's routinely stacked with outstanding contenders with the biggest alpha among them holding the title. Golovkin is surely the alpha fighter at 160 today, and if there's a fighter in the division who can match-up with his physicality, I haven't seen or heard of him. The only fighter in the division who slightly excites fans as far as being an opponent for Gennady is Saul "Canelo" Alvarez 46-1-1 (32), who is the lineal champ. And for the past four or five months it's been floated via the media that if Golovkin beats Domenic Wade 18-0 (12) this Saturday night and Alvarez beats Amir Khan 31-3 (19) next month, the two will fight later this year for the undisputed middleweight title -- something I don't think many hold out much hope in happening, but for argument sake, let’s suppose they do meet and Golovkin wins.

Then what?

The sad truth is after Alvarez, there's really not an exceptional middleweight (and I'm not even sure Alvarez is one) around whom one can imagine pushing Golovkin or giving him much of a fight. And that hurts Gennady's chance to make millions of dollars and maybe even worse, it'll be more difficult for him to build a legacy that rivals recent greats the likes of Carlos Monzon, Marvin Hagler and Bernard Hopkins.

It doesn't take the most sophisticated observer around to grasp that Golovkin is a physical beast in the ring. But the middleweight division isn't a terribly fast track in 2016. There are three fighters everyone brings up when trying to picture a super-fight in which Golovkin is part of the equation.....Floyd Mayweather, Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev. Mayweather is a natural welterweight and if he were to fight Golovkin, he'd insist that Gennady weigh in at 155, and that would compromise Golovkin in a big way. Andre Ward has been a super middleweight his entire career and has recently moved up to light heavyweight. Which means Golovkin would have to venture north of his natural weight in order to be involved in a fight that would capture interest around the globe. As for Kovalev, he's been fighting as a light heavyweight his entire career and would hold a distinct physical advantage over Golovkin.

There are so many reasons to like and root for Golovkin. He has an exciting style that insures his bouts, regardless of the opponent, will be action packed and more often than not end by stoppage. He's improving as a technician and he is believable when he says he wants to fight the best of the best. Unfortunately, there isn't another middleweight in the world qualified to fight him that's an outstanding fighter, let alone a near great. Monzon, Hagler and Hopkins had the same problem after they cleaned out the division. With the difference being, the big names for those three to fight were welterweights and junior middleweights that moved up to 160. Monzon had great welters the likes of Emile Griffith and Jose Napoles who moved up to fight him. Hagler benefited from Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard all moving up to partake in super-fights with him, as did Hopkins when Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad packed on a few more pounds to challenge him for the middleweight title.

Golovkin isn't as fortunate. The marque welterweights of today....Manny Pacquiao, Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia, Kell Brook and Timothy Bradley aren't seen as a legitimate threat to GGG who one day, due to his fight altering power, may be seen as a near equal to Monzon, Hagler and Hopkins.....and the current elite welterweights aren't near the fighters Griffith, Napoles, Duran, Hearns, Leonard, De La Hoya and Trinidad were. Only Mayweather offers Golovkin, in terms of stature and ability, what the aforementioned greats did for Monzon, Hagler and Hopkins. But unlike Leonard, Hearns, Griffith and the others, Mayweather's not interested in really challenging himself. Floyd wouldn't agree to the bout unless Golovkin was completely hamstrung contractually and agreed to enter the ring handcuffed literally and figuratively. So fighting Mayweather in a legitimate bout will never be offered to Gennady. This in turn leaves him two choices - move up and fight bigger guys and spot them weight or stay at middleweight and clean out the division.

Mike Tyson made a ton of money cleaning out a weak division and eventually retired as an all-time great. It's not Gennady's fault today's middleweight division is so pedestrian and he's perhaps a once in a generation fighter from a physical vantage point. It’s very plausible that he can build quite a legacy and bank account having final say at 160 for years to come by constantly being the author of highlight reel knockouts during his title defenses. It’s in his best interest to stay at 160, and if lighter weight fighters want to become middleweight champ, they know who to see.

Was There a Third Reason Why Pacquiao-Bradley III was a PPV Bust

The PPV buys for Pacquiao-Btradley III were "terrible" in the words of Bob Arum. He was hoping for 700,000 PPV buys. The true figure is closer to 400,000, roughly the same as Floyd Mayweather's last fight vs. Andre Berto. Arum says he will lose money on the promotion.

Arum cites two reasons for the disappointing showing. One is buyer's remorse. Many people felt gypped by the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, especially when it came out that PacMan was damaged goods. They weren't about to pour more money into PacMan's coffers. Arum also says that Pacquiao's widely quoted comments on homosexuality were commercially toxic.

But another factor -- one Arum won't acknowledge -- may have contributed to the bad numbers. How foolish was he to trump (pun intended) the preliminary bouts as his "No Trump" undercard?

This has nothing to do with whether you are cheered or mortified at the thought of The Donald becoming our next president. The reality is that a large portion of the electorate supports him. It figured that they would boycott an event with a "No Trump" undercard.

Perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps this wasn't that big a deal, but I suspect that it cost Arum and everyone else involved in the promotion a tidy sum of money.

A Replay of the Fight of the Century -- this Century -- airs tonight on Showtime Extreme

Tonight, Thursday, April 21, Showtime is airing a replay of Corrales-Castillo I. It airs at 10 PM Eastern and Pacific time.

The fight between the late Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo was held on May 7, 2005 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Virtually every scribe in attendance said it was best fight they had ever seen. Al Bernstein says it was the best fight he had the privilege of announcing in his 35 years behind the mike.

I'll bet that even if the details of the fight have become murky with the passage of time, that many of you have a vivid recollection of where you were when you were watching the fight.

The Return of Tom Zbikowski: How Far Can He Go?

Tom Zbikowski, a third-generation Chicago fireman, returns to the ring after a five-year absence on Friday, April 22, on a small club show at the Belvedere Hotel in the Chicago suburb of Elk Grove. Zbikowski (4-0, 3 KOs) opposes Keith Jackson from Springfield, Missouri. Jackson is reportedly 2-2-2.

How deliciously ironic that Zbikowski's opponent bears the same name as the man considered the greatest play-by-play sportscaster in the annals of college football. It's no exaggeration to say that Tom Zbikowski, a safety and return specialist, ranks as one of the most popular players in the modern era of Notre Dame football. A third round draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens, he spent five seasons in the NFL, appearing in 11 post-season games.

A portion of the proceeds of Friday's show will go to the family of a firefighter who died in the line of duty this past December. But while Zbikowski jumped at the opportunity to assist the family of a fallen comrade, he insists that his return to the ring is no one-shot deal. A small heavyweight (5'11", 212 pounds) when he made his pro debut in 2006, he says that his ultimate goal is to win a world title as a light heavyweight or a cruiserweight, whichever weight feels most comfortable. To this end, he recently spent time at Abel Sanchez's famous Summit Gym in Big Bear Lake, California, home to Gennady Golovkin.

Zbikowski started boxing at the age of nine, reportedly winning 75 of 90 amateur fights. He had his first pro bout in the summer between his junior and senior seasons. With several of his Notre Dame teammates looking on, he knocked out a fighter of no renown in 49 seconds. The bout was on the undercard of the Cotto-Malignaggi fight at Madison Square Garden.

Bob Arum had big plans for him, even entrusting him to the renowned trainer Emanuel Steward, but the NFL intervened. The standard players contract prohibits a player from engaging in another sport without the consent of management. A brief league-wide lockout in 2011 invalidated the clause. Zbikowski slipped in three more pro fights in a six-week span but didn't continue with boxing after leaving the league.

In retirement, Zbikowski battled alcohol and drug problems. A four-week stay at a rehabilitation facility in Arizona in the summer of 2014 was therapeutic. In a conversation with South Bend Tribune writer Mike Vorel, Zbikowski stated that he hasn't touched a drop of alcohol since July 12, 2014.

Down the road -- if Zbikowski is serious about his prizefighting aspirations -- it wouldn't be shocking to see him lock horns with Mike Lee. A cruiserweight, currently undefeated, Lee (16-0, 10 KOs) is a fellow Chicagoan and, like Zbikowski, a Notre Dame alum with a football background.

Friday's show is promoted by Bobby Hitz, a former fringe heavyweight contender whose opponents ran the gamut from Pete Susens to George Foreman. First bell for the five-bout card is 7 PM local time.

Errol spence very impressive

Spence is out of the cage. As long as he stays in the gym he might be the next guy to takeover the welterweight divisions. Put him vs Garcia at Barclays.

Errol spence very impressive

Stinky decision on that Marcus Brown fight.

Ref Tony had his hands full but Browne should have been dq'd ala Roy Jones Montell Griffin.

Besides that the "opponent " put up with the blatant fouls and pressed the action and had the prospect out on his feet and on his backside.

At minimum a draw. In reality the underdog got the shaft.

Ike Ibeabuchi Has Reportedly Been Arrested Again

The Associated Press is reporting that former top heavyweight contender Ike Ibeabuchi was arrested on Thursday, April 7, in the Phoenix suburb of Gilbert, Arizona, on a charge of parole violation. Details are vague, but apparently Ibeabuchi failed to initiate a treatment program that was a condition of his release from custody.

Ibeabuchi, a Nigerian immigrant, launched his pro career in Louisiana after winning amateur titles in Texas. In 1997, he outpointed previously undefeated David Tua in hugely entertaining fight and then, in 1999, he scored a fifth round knockout over previously undefeated Chris Byrd. At that juncture, there was a strong school of opinion that Ike was the most talented heavyweight in the world.

In 2001, he was arrested for sexually assaulting a dancer from an escort service at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. His defense team was hampered by three prior allegations of a similar nature.

Ibeabuchi’s arrest begat a 16-year period of confinement that began at a state operated facility for the mentally ill in Nevada and ended at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Center in Eloy, Arizona.
Set free in November of last year, Ibeabuchi turned 43 on Feb. 2. A comeback was in the works. Mike Koncz, an advisor to Manny Pacquiao, was assisting him in an advisory capacity.

If Ibeabuchi never fights again, he will leave the sport with a record of 20-0 with 15 KOs.

Nick Blackwell Awakes After Seven Days in an Induced Coma and appears OK

Nick Blackwell emerged from his medically induced coma on Saturday at St. Mary's hospital in London. Yesterday (April 3) he was able to speak with family and friends.

Blackwell collapsed after his brutal bout with Chris Eubank Jr., which was stopped in the 10th round on the advice of the ringside physician because of a severely swollen left eye. He collapsed after the stoppage and left the ring on a stretcher. He had bleeding on the brain, but not to the extent that it required an operation. Over three million people tuned in to watch the fight on a free TV channel.

It is not known when Blackwell will be discharged, but all signs are positive.

Manny Pacquiao Nearly Assaulted Outside LA Restaurant

According to news reports, Manny Pacquiao was nearly assaulted outside an LA area restaurant about 3 PM on Sunday afternoon, April 3. The restaurant was identified as the Kabuki Japanese Restaurant on Vine Street in Hollywood. Pac-man went there with family and friends after attending church services.

The would-be assailant, described as a tall, well-dressed white man in his thirties, shouted "**** you Pacquaio" as he approached the fighter and was said to be only inches away when members of Pacquaio's entourage interceded. On Pacquiao's orders, they let the man go without roughing him up. There were no U.S. media present and the police were not notified.

The Pacquiao-Bradley fight is receiving extensive coverage here at TSS. Check out articles by Frank Lotierzo, Jeff Freeman, and Miguel Iturrate with more to come from on-site correspondents as the fight draws closer.

Can Timothy Bradley Pull Off The Upset Come Saturday?

Here is the outcome everyone already has in the back of their minds. Manny Pacquiao wins his third bout with Timothy Bradley this coming Saturday, April 9th, probably by decision, and he goes on to fight two or three more times.

After all, heading into this weekend´s HBO pay-per-view showdown, the sport books have installed the Pac-man a -230 favorite, with Bradley returning at +190. They fight, Pacquiao wins, business as usual. The line may actually be tighter than the general consensus, which sees most people picking Pacquaio to win again.

But what if Bradley is able to do the unexpected? More importantly, what if Pacquaio is not the same fighter anymore? The circumstances leading up to this fight for the two fighters appear to be opposite and are worth examining.

Pacquiao is 57-6-2 and he has been one of boxing’s top box office attractions for a decade. In the Philippines, he is the most famous person in the country. He sits in the country's House of Representatives and there has been talk of a future presidential run if he wins his run for the Senate. Whether he plays basketball or sings karaoke, it is news and his every step is followed.

In May of 2015 Pacquaio fought Floyd Mayweather Jr in a fight that was easily the biggest box office take in boxing history, and he pocketed eight figures for the fight. He lost by unanimous decision and the fight generally disappointed, and we haven’t seen Pac-man since.

The past eleven months have seen Pacquiao turn 37 years old, and he had surgery on his right shoulder to repair his torn rotator cuff. That is a pretty serious injury for a boxer, even if he is a southpaw. There is a very real question as to whether he will be the same. In one press engagement, promoter Bob Arum stated that Pacquiao did not look good in training. Arum has since back-pedaled on that statement, but whether Pacquiao's shoulder will be the same come April 9th is not known by anyone.

In the build-up to this fight, Pacquiao has been all over the news, and for the wrong reasons. He spoke publicly about homosexual behavior and it caused a furor that has not gone away. The issue now hangs over him at every step because he stood by his comments in subsequent statements.

With the April fight signed, February saw Pacquiao shift his training camp to Los Angeles and the Wild Card Boxing gym. This has been his routine for years, as he normally relocates with a large entourage that is “known” around Los Angeles and its hot spots.

The media outlet TMZ recently reported that Pacquiao went to the L.A shopping mall called “The Grove” to see a movie. Certainly Pacquiao is not inconspicuous as his entourage numbered sixteen people, but Mall officials saw him and banned him from the “The Grove” because of his anti-gay pronouncements. So much for that afternoon at the movies Pac-man was looking for.

The atmosphere around Tim Bradley is much different. He is thirty two years old, and he has lost just once in a career that has spanned a dozen years. Currently the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board has him ranked at number four on their pound for pound list. Considering his resume, he may be right when he says he gets no respect. He is known as an extremely hard worker and as an extremely disciplined fighter. Over-training has been cited as one of the culprits that caused his loss to Pacquiao.

Bradley’s career did appear to grow stale after the second Pacquiao fight. He fought to a lackluster draw with Argentina’s Diego Gabriel Chavez in 2014, and in June of 2015 he won an interim WBO Welterweight belt with a close UD win over Jessie Vargas that did more for Vargas’s reputation than it did for Bradley’s.

Talk in the boxing world was that Bradley was slipping and was not the same anymore. Bradley needed a change and that came by way of his departure from longtime trainer Joel Diaz. Bradley replaced him with long-retired Teddy Atlas and the effects have been noticeable. Atlas is dedicated to Bradley completely, with no other clients. While Pacquiao is definitely a VIP with trainer Freddie Roach at Wild Card, he is part of a factory over there, plain and simple.

Keep in mind it is not important if you are a fan of Teddy Atlas or not. What is important is that he has Bradley’s complete buy-in and he has worked to make Bradley even tougher mentally. The pair appeared together for the first time for the November of 2015 meeting between Bradley and Brandon Rios where Bradley won via a 9th round stoppage. The win was nice, and the pair received very good reviews – Bradley for his excellent performance and Atlas for bringing it out of him. It was a solid start and definitely had the effect of cleansing Bradley’s memory of his recent rough period, laying a strong foundation between them. Pacquiao still has his last ring experience as the Mayweather bout, and he needs to get that behind him.

Had Bradley taken a loss to anyone other than Pacquiao it would have crippled his career. Now he has a chance to go up 2-1 in his trilogy of fights with Pacquaio who is most assuredly one of the top three fighters of this era. A win for Bradley would lay a strong foundation for his legacy, and that is something that Bradley does think about. For Pacquiao, a win means the cycle begins all over again, ending with a 747 plane full of hangers-on flying to his next big fight on Manny's dime, be it in Macao or Vegas. Time is ticking, and Manny will be 38 before the close of 2016.

On April 9th the world will see Pacquiao-Bradley III. Who wins will be decided in the ring, but in the build-up to the fight the real pressure appears to be all on Pacquiao. And when you are an icon to millions, that pressure can get overwhelming. What if Bradley can turn that into a win this Saturday? Teddy Atlas would tell you he knew it was going to happen all along.
