The PPV buys for Pacquiao-Btradley III were "terrible" in the words of Bob Arum. He was hoping for 700,000 PPV buys. The true figure is closer to 400,000, roughly the same as Floyd Mayweather's last fight vs. Andre Berto. Arum says he will lose money on the promotion.
Arum cites two reasons for the disappointing showing. One is buyer's remorse. Many people felt gypped by the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, especially when it came out that PacMan was damaged goods. They weren't about to pour more money into PacMan's coffers. Arum also says that Pacquiao's widely quoted comments on homosexuality were commercially toxic.
But another factor -- one Arum won't acknowledge -- may have contributed to the bad numbers. How foolish was he to trump (pun intended) the preliminary bouts as his "No Trump" undercard?
This has nothing to do with whether you are cheered or mortified at the thought of The Donald becoming our next president. The reality is that a large portion of the electorate supports him. It figured that they would boycott an event with a "No Trump" undercard.
Perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps this wasn't that big a deal, but I suspect that it cost Arum and everyone else involved in the promotion a tidy sum of money.
