Skender Halili - Jason Thompson Round 2
I try to catch every fight I possibly can in this sport because well you never know what will happen. Yesterday in Niagara Falls, NY on CBS Sports Network a swing bout made the air between Skender Halili (9-1, 9 KO's) and Jason Thompson (5-11-4, 5 KO's). On paper, it was a mismatch in favor of Halili and the expected result was for Halili to score a spectacular early ko.
He did and with a one punch knockout at the end of round 2.
But before that, Thompson had Halili down and nearly out in the 2nd. It was a brutal knock down and it did not look like Halili would last long. Halili gutted it out and slugged back with Thompson who was still getting the better of the exchanges. Thompson was credited with a 2nd knockdown when the ropes held Halili up later in the round. Again, the end appeared near for Halili. But he somehow regained his legs and sent Thompson down moments later with a right hand that clipped Thompson flush on the chin. It was a right hand that traveled no more than six inches but landed as Thompson was pressing forward launching his own right going for the finish himself. Thompson was out cold and the referee quickly waived the fight off.
This is why I watch every fight I can. You just never know in this sport what you will witness. This is one of the best rounds I have ever seen and would characterize it as a poor man's Corrales-Castillo round 10. In my opinion, this will be round of the year in 2016.

Meanwhile at the House of Ale for Our Boxing Ails
The bar is open and sadly Randall Cobb's guest slot as bartender is over. He is off swinging midgets elsewehere. Thankfully, Swede Anthony Gjergjaj has joined us and he has a large selection of fancy Euro micro brew macro price beers for you all. "Prince" Charles Martin is sleeping head down at the bar, dressed in purple in an apparent tribute to the guy he considers the other "Prince". Before passing out he karaoke'd a helacious version of "Nothing Compares To U" and dedicated it to Anthony Joshua.
Leaving the bar this week and apparently confused and thinking they may have one more shot are Chris Arreola and David Price. It is a big loss here at the bar because with Price gone we cant get to the top shelf whiskey without a step ladder. The brightside is with Arreola gone at least he wont hog the pigs in the blanket and other finger foods.

A Big Upset in the Featured Bout Seals a Wild Knockout Night At The D
By Alex Caveda, guest columnist
Las Vegas, NV. Local boxing fans had plenty to keep them busy this Saturday night when two separate boxing shows took place at the same time. Thats right, the same evening that the Cosmopolitan casino on the strip staged a professional boxing card, the D casino in downtown Las Vegas also staged a pro card. Such is the overflow presented to Las Vegas boxing fans.
The Cosmopolitan show saw victories scored by the fast rising Charlo brothers and Cuban Erislandy Lara, but this writer was ringside at the Knockout Night At The D card. Boxing at The D is becoming a regular occurrence, with another show scheduled for next month, and more scheduled after the summer heat decreases a bit in September. The card at The D didnt feature as many big names as the Cosmopolitan show, but the fights were arguably more enjoyable due to some competitive matchmaking. The evening began with some prospects in search of more exposure, and ended with an upset in the main event.
The first match on the card featured newcomer Jeremy Nichols, dubbed J-Flash, squaring off with Julio Santos of Puerto Rico. The 4 round welterweight contest went the distance with the undefeated Nichols moving to 4-0 (2) via unanimous decision. However, Santos gave Nichols more trouble than one might expect. None would question that Nichols won as he was the aggressor, but he was vulnerable to Santos counters. All three judges scored the fight 39-37. Jay Nady was the referee.
Second on the card was a highlight reel knockout from Texas prospect Tony Phenom Lopez, who proved a bigger puncher than expected. Moving up to 11-1 (4), Lopez blasted out previously undefeated (11-0-1) Jerren Cochran at 0:22 of the 2nd round. It can be said that Lopez knockout was so emphatic that he knocked out both his opponent, and the referee! The knockout would prove fateful for referee Kenny Bayless, but more on that in a moment.
The 511 Lopez, tall for a junior featherweight, was not content to use his height for a cautious win. Instead Lopez started aggressively, forcing Cochran to back off with his first combination. Midway through the round Cochran was knocked to a sitting position from a textbook one-two combination down the middle. With about 20 seconds to go in the round Lopez decked Cochran again with a punch that sent Cochran face down to the canvas. This time Cochran struggled up, but there were only about 10 seconds left in the round. The end of the round simply prolonged the inevitable ending.
As soon as the second round started Lopez backed Cochran into the corner then let loose with a combination that again sent Cochran face first to the canvas. This time Cochran was out cold, his vacant eyes blinking rapidly as the count started. As it was obvious that he would not beat the count, referee Bayless didnt even finish counting. After a few minutes Cochran was assisted up but as Bayless attempted to lift him up Cochran was still so out of it that he tumbled back down, crashing onto Bayless, which resulted in Bayless dislocating his elbow. This freak injury forced Bayless to miss the rest of the card, and put Jay Nady in a strange position. Since Nevadas other referees were at the Cosmopolitan show, Nady was forced to work the rest of the D card all alone.
Before bout number three could begin a fight erupted in the stands between some members of the audience. Security was right on top of things, quickly ejecting the streetfighters from the arena. The big surprise was that when they were separated the people brawling were two middle aged women! After this came a break of 20 minutes or so as fans waited for the first live televised bout on CBS Sports Net.
When the next contest began heavily hyped 17 year old Devin Haney looked every bit a future champion as he pummeled capable Jairo Vargas of Mexico into defeat in a lightweight battle. Haney, who progressed to 6-0 (4), showed incredible maturity for his age. What made things more impressive was that the 4-1 (3) Vargas, who entered the contest also undefeated, came to fight; he was just totally outclassed.
The end came at the 1:34 mark of the 4th round right after Vargas had been knocked down for the first time. Referee Jay Nady didnt even bother to count. In truth Vargas looked clear eyed, and probably could have continued, but he was so vastly outclassed that even his supporters did not complain of the stoppage. Haney, who wants to box once a month for the rest of this year, showed a great arsenal of punches. The left jab, overhand right, and hooks to the body all stood out. One can never tell where a teenage prospect will go but Haney appears to have as bright a future as any boxing manager would want. To make matters better Haney also delivered outside of the ring when it came to selling tickets, as many locals came out specifically to see him in action. Haney is trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr.
Originally there was to be six bouts, but a late cancellation reduced that number to five. Fight four saw a real slugfest as 154lb. Tejano John Vera out-brawled Arizonas 153lb. Joey Ruelas in a real brawl that ended all too soon.
At the start Veras jab was accurate, but Ruelas seemed to get stronger midway through the 2nd round. A hard combination buckled Veras knees, forced him to hold, and showed him that he was in a real fight. Ruelas did the better work, particularly when he backed Vera near the ropes. However, Ruelas was also warned twice for hitting low. It appeared as if Ruelas was in control until the start of round 6 when Vera suddenly blasted out with combinations. Ruelas was wobbled but did not go down, and kept punching back. Suddenly referee Jay Nady waved the bout over at 1:17 of the round with Ruelas still up. The moment the stoppage took place the cheering turned to solid boos.
While Nady may have been prudent in erring on the side of caution the stoppage sure looked early from my vantage-point. True Ruelas was wobbly, but he was fighting back, and in such a see-saw fight, with no knockdowns yet, it would have been nice to have seen if Ruelas could have rebounded again. Nady now had to deal with the challenges of working four of the five bouts, but also being booed before the main event began. Vera rose to 14-0 (9) while Ruelas sank to 10-2-1 (4). Afterwards Ruelas was not available for comment which was too bad since it would have been intriguing to hear what he had to say about the seemingly quick stoppage.
In the main event 30-year-old Andrew Hurricane Hernandez scored the nights only big surprise as he out-boxed world ranked Arif Magomedov of Russia for an impressive 10 round decision. Both men scaled 160 pounds.
Magomedov entered the ring at 17-0 (10), rated in the top 5 by the WBC, WBA, and WBO, as high as #2 in the WBC ratings. All Magomedov needed to do was keep busy with a win or two against credible opponents and a title shot seemed to be his, but that all changed. Meanwhile, Hernandez entered the ring trying to shake of the ghosts of what happened to him last August.
In his home state of Arizona Hernandez was boxing well against Louis Rose when he suddenly tired and was stopped in the 8th round. That bout created a frustrating reputation for Hernandez. Sure Hernandez could box, his critics reasoned, but they also assumed off of that showing that he did not have the stamina to get through a hard fight. Going into Saturday nights showdown with Magomedov, Hernandez insisted to all who would listen that he was in the best shape of his life, and he backed up those claims once the bell sounded.
The contest started relatively tame with Hernandez gaining the lead with some beautiful jabbing. Midway through round 3 Hernandez increased the pressure, cutting Magomedov over his eye, and drawing blood from Magomedovs nose. This round was a major step forward for Hernandez but he also finished the round in far more pain than anyone at ringside would have guessed. Although Magamedov had been punished by Hernandez fists, Hernandez had been punished by misfortune, as he twisted his ankle while going for the finish. Hernandez was not about to let the biggest chance of his young career escape, so he ignored the pain, hid the injury, and kept on out-boxing his man.
Round 4 was slow to start as doctors checked the cut. Magomedovs corner was eventually able to contain the bleeding, but they could do nothing to stop Hernandez from scoring time and again. Hernandez also worked the body well, but just when he seemed in the clear, old questions about his stamina were raised. Around the 8th round Hernandez seemed to visibly tire, and was breathing out of his mouth. Yet again Hernandez dug deep, and boxed his way out of danger until he got his second wind. In the 10th and final round Hernandez went for a big finish rather than just coast on a points lead. With about a minute to go Hernandez caught Magomedov coming in, knocking the Russian to the canvas. When Magomedov got up Hernandez blasted him from all angles, sending him reeling into the ropes. This time referee Nady was not quick for a stoppage, but although Magomedov lasted the distance, he was soundly defeated. This writers unofficial scorecard was 97-92 for Hernandez. The judges had him winning by an even wider margin: 98-91and 100-89 (twice).
Afterwards Hernandez had a brief chat with reporters before he had to be taken to the hospital due to his ankle injury. When asked about his big finish Hernandez said he knew its time to close the show I amped it up in that last round. Hernandez wanted to stay longer but doctors orders were that he have his ankle treated right away.
As strange as it may sound Hernandez was probably the happiest patient at the local hospital last night. While the ankle injury was certainly no fun, Hernandez, who rose to 12-4-1 (3), could smile in the fact that in one evening he had changed his career. He had gone from a little known local boxer, with obvious skills but a cloud of doubt about his stamina, to a bona-fide contender.
Afterwards I spoke to a member of Hernandez team who had tears of joy in her eyes. She showed me her smartphone which revealed plenty of congratulations to Hernandez on his Facebook page. Sure Hernandez had surprised many, but more importantly he had made his local supporters, family, and friends very proud by delivering in his big chance. That is plenty of reason why Hernandez probably reclined in his hospital bed with a big smile, and plenty of reason to be optimistic about his future.
So a contender was upset, a contender was born, prospects continued their rise, and the spectators had a wild evening. It was all another Knockout Night At The D.

Canelo's Rumored Opponent
Rumor is spreading through social media that Canelo's next opponent will be one Liam Smith (also known as "Beefy"). The date being mentioned is September 17th at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
Obviously this is not the fight we want. But Golden Boy is going to milk their lone cash cow as much as they can until they take another significant risk. And as I thought about it more, even names such as Lemiuex and Stevens made little sense as both bring too much risk (especially Lemiuex) along with too little reward. Actually, Lemiuex-Stevens is a rumored undercard bout for the PPV card.
Back to Beefy for a second... I have seen him fight and the most I can say about him is that he makes the most out of his abilities. He is solid and technically pretty sound. He is a good body puncher and I guess would best be described as a grinder. Smith is active and looks to break his opponents down with his activity as well as body punching as his fights progress. He also holds a belt, the WBO Light Middleweight Title, and a fight against Smith would probably be contested at 154 to help sell it better as a title fight.
Smith's record is 22-0 (1 early career draw in there too) with 12 ko's. He is not a big puncher at all. This of course lends all the more credence to him being mentioned as a Canelo foe. Smith's must notable win was against Boxcino winner John Thompson last year to win the WBO belt. Thompson's speed caused Smith trouble early but Thompson couldn't sustain an early frantic pace and essentially gassed out. Other than Thompson, really no notable name's on the Smith resume.
I will also say this about the rumored fight. If I were a matchmaker at Golden Boy looking at a list of possible opponents, Smith would be option A, B and C. As I said, he is not a big puncher at all. Also, though skilled is methodical and though not slow does not possess either quick feet or quick hands. Thompson found him an easy target and Thompson's hand speed caused Smith trouble in their fight. Canelo would have little trouble getting to Smith and breaking Brit down for what would probably be a dominant early to mid round stoppage.
This is what is going through the mill at the moment. It unfortunately from a fan's perspective is not that enticing a fight but from a business perspective in Golden Boy's eyes makes all the sense in the world at the moment.

When Boxing fans become MBAs
Back in the day, who would have imagined a young boxing fan discussing the exit strategy of a boxer? But today, young fans who watch fights, read articles, and exchange posts on the many sites, have been able to build up, albeit unknowingly, an understanding of many basic business and economic concepts.
Marketing
Tyson Fury makes Adrian Broner look dull (which, in fact, he may be). Saying outrageous things that make The Donald look pious. Fury has created a persona that attracts the attention of scribes like honey attracts bees.
Broner, on the other hand, is the bad book-end that creates attention through disgusting and self-destructive behavior. Giving interviews while on the toilet seat is not what Marketing 101 teachesor maybe a newer version does.
Shannon Briggs has used mind-numbing self-marketing notions to secure a big payday against David Haye. Listening to Lets go champ is akin to scratching ones fingernails across a blackboard, but it seems to have worked.
Riskreward
Witnessing Canelo Alvarez weigh the risks of fighting Gennady Golovkin vs. relinquishing his belt so he can continue to secure big paydays at far less risk may not make the fans happy but at least they understand his rationale. Right now, Canelos prospects for big paydays are better than GGGs notwithstanding the latters perceived superior skills. Fact is, the entire notion of cherry picking is predicated on risk-reward with some elements of marketing thrown in. Haye and Briggs have this down pat.
Supply and Demand
Andre Ward has run out of opponents and therefore has become much in demand. Now, the Krusher fills the bill. Adonis Stevenson, meanwhile, seems to have vanished.
The welterweight division has the supply, and the demand is building. The fans will benefit from great matchups but the price will be steep as demand usually equated to higher ticket prices
Conversely, Golovkin may have to move up because the supply of viable opponents is rapidly dwindling. Time will tell as he scrambles for his money against the likes of Jacobs, Eubanks and./or Billy Joe.
Erislandy Lara, as just one example, possesses obvious skills and is ranked high but his fights are usually boring, and he refuses to take chances. There simply is no demand to see him fight
Price theory
Quite simply, when a fighter can command a storing demand, he or she can enjoy the benefits of more revenue via stronger ticket sales. David lHaye does this in the UK as he usually is the A side fighter and people will pay to see him toil in the ring.
Consolidation
Golovkin is all about consolidating belts and securing a solid base.
Fraud
The fixed fight is not a commonplace happening, but fighters using banned substances are and it begs for stiffer penalties. Unlike perp walks that corporate fraudsters are known for, a multi-year ban could work wonders.
Exit strategy
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. waited until Pacquiao had marinated and then beat him handily. Floyd then completed his exit plan by beating a very beatable Andre Beto. The exit plan he used could be the topic of a Harvard case study given its length and use of careful cherry picking along the way.
Negotiations or the Art of the deal
Catchweight fights have become controversial but they are usually made, through careful negotiation, to give one fighter an advantage over another, Caneloweight and Cottoweight are new boxing terms that reflect the use of this technique.
When Sugar Real Leonard negotiated the terms of the Hagler fight, someone on Rays team knew all about the art of the deal.
There are many, many additional ways that young fans have learned about business through boxing.
Can you name some?

Sweet and Sour re Victor Ortiz. Two Viewpoints.
Victor Ortiz has been the target of brutal criticism since his fourth-round stoppage loss to Andre Berto, but Ortizs trainer, Joseph Hoss Janik, has had enough of his fighter being called a quitter, and took to Instagram to make the following soulful comments:
The Sweet
"Outsiders will never know what it takes just to get to this point. Pain, sacrifice, discipline, heart & balls. Victor put in the work & was executing our game plan perfectly when he got hit with a great uppercut. He rose from that devastating shot & didn't hold...he didn't run...he showed amazing courage & will to immediately trade with Berto attempting to hurt him with a big shot. As a teacher, I would have liked to see my student be a little more defensive at that time BUT his natural instincts as a fighter took over and he attempted to steady himself and answer with his own power shots. What more can you ask. When he climbed to his feet after the 2nd knockdown, I could see in his eyes he was out on his feet. If Jack Reiss hadn't stopped the fight, I would have. Soldiers are warriors who fight & die for a greater good(I served with honor in the U.S. Army so I know), while fighters are modern day gladiators that battle each other for our entertainment. They lose a little bit of themselves every time they enter the ring/cage whether sparring or in a fight. That's the path they chose. However, they should never be expected to put their lives on the line. That price is ultimately TOO high. I am proud of the way my guy fought and conducts himself in & out of the ring. He is dedicated, proud, funny, caring & talented. This loss saddened him greatly even though most of you will never see that. He lives his life the way he wants to & I respect him for that. I have found that people dislike others because we are not who THEY want us to be. That saddens me. I stand proudly & confidently as a man, a son, a brother, a parent, a teacher & a human being... a child of GOD #themaninthemirror #knuckleheadzfamily"
The Sour
The talented Mikey Garcia made the following negative--and grammatically challenged-- comments about Victor.
"He tried to make it seem like he didn't quit. From what I've seen, and I think a lot of people will agree, he quit on himself. And that's not the first time it happened. He don't wanna make it seem like that. He stood there, he got up at the very, very last second, thinking Jack's just gonna stop it. Jack's giving him an opportunity, asking him, and he pretends or acts like he's hurt, waiting for the ref to stop it so it don't look like he quit. But he quit. He don't have it. He just don't have it. He's never had it. We were sparring back when we were 16, 17 years old, and I was the first one to tell Robert and my dad, 'You know what, this guy don't got it. He doesn't have the heart. He's gonna probably quit one day.' And at that time he was too young, whatever, but he ended up doing it. He did it with Maidana, he did it now, he did it with Floyd, he did it with Collazo. Every single time, he's been dropped and whatever, but when the fight is stopped, it seems like he just decides not to."
I once learned the hard way that if you have something bad to say about someone, you might not want to say it. Garcia is riding high. He had no reason to do this. Another thing I learned the hard way when I was young is that when someone is down and in a corner, it's not good to go after them

Briggs's opponent Dimitrenko hass "pulled out"
The smell on this one is getting worse by the minute.
According to Fightnews.com, Jakov Gospic of Croatia (17-14( has been mentioned as monster step down from Dimitrenko, the 33-year-old from Zadar is a small at 6’1” and he has been waxed eight times. Gospic, a serial loser in the UK, has been stopped by Matt Skelton in 2012, by Gary Cornish the following year and by Dereck Chisora last year. Briggs will probably KO Jakov in the first round.
BTW, I'm not sure how Gospic's first name --Jakov-- :o should be pronounced but it might be a clue as to the freak-show aura Brigg's "comeback" has taken on.

Today in Brockton Boxing History
Exactly 43 years ago today in 1973, Marvin Hagler makes his professional boxing debut in the gymnasium of my future alma mater, Brockton High School, in Brockton, Mass. The future marvelous world middleweight champion knocked out Terry Ryan to kick off one the greatest careers in all of boxing history. Before winning the middleweight championship, Hagler fought several times at Brockton High School where today stands a 22 foot tall tribute to the 49-0 Brockton Blockbuster Rocky Marciano. I hope to live long enough to someday see another boxing statue go up in my hometown for the Brockton Blackbuster, The Marvelous One, Marvin Hagler.

Canelo Hasn't Improved Since Fighting Mayweather
By Frank Lotierzo
This past Saturday night lineal middleweight champ Saul "Canelo" Alvarez 47-1-1 (33) scored a sensational sixth round one-punch knockout over former two division title holder Amir Khan 31-4 (19). The right hander that dropped and stopped Khan was a thing of beauty. It was short, direct and right on the chin. Amir was out on the way down, and when he landed his body and head bounced off the canvas and there was no need to count because the fight was over. The knockout scored by Alvarez was pretty much what most everyone expected going into the bout, and yes, the one-punch knockout, which is rare among elite fighters, doesn't come as a shock either because Amir is not known for being the greatest catcher.
In the aftermath Alvarez is being celebrated and in most boxing circles the chatter is centered on when and if he'll meet Gennady Golovkin 35-0 (32) who holds the WBA/IBF middleweight titles. After the bout, while being interviewed in the ring, Alvarez said that he doesn't fear anyone but didn't exactly commit himself to meeting Golovkin in his next bout. And you know what, although I would favor Golovkin if they met, Alvarez wouldn't be a no-hope prey touching hands with GGG because of their style clash. Because if we know one thing for certain, it’s that Canelo won't have to seek out Golovkin the way he was forced to against Khan.
Yes, Canelo's highlight reel KO of Amir Khan is memorable, but it's not what stands out in my mind pertaining to the bout, no, not by a long shot. What stood out to me during the bout is just how inept Alvarez is when he has to carry the action and fight as the pursuer or the attacker. It was on the verge of embarrassing just how many wild left-hooks and right hands he missed during the first five rounds of the fight. I can't remember when was the last time I saw an elite fighter move his hands with his feet planted instead of stepping with the punch fighting a guy who was moving away and to one side or the other. Alvarez was no doubt confused, unimaginative, and slow -- everything he was when he fought Floyd Mayweather. Only this time he wasn't in with a special fighter and was saved by his power against a fighter who lacked the strength and chin to stand his ground.
In truth Canelo hasn't improved since he fought Floyd Mayweather, not at all, and if they fought again, it would be a rerun of the first fight in spite of the fact that Floyd may have slowed and isn't quite what he was almost three years ago. Granted, Alvarez's ineptness to cut off the ring and close the distance against a fighter who is moving and picking his spots won't be an issue when he fights Golovkin. However, it's another layer of undeniable proof that Saul hasn't really improved technically as a fighter. I was completely astounded by how far Alvarez stepped back after the clinches in the fight. There were times after they were separated that Khan, who should've been on his heels at all times, didn't have to move a bit because Alvarez moved so far away on his own volition to reset after they were broken apart. And he didn't do this just once or twice; it was nearly every time they had to be separated. It's unfathomable that his corner never mentioned to him that he was giving away his entire advantage.
The thing that saved Alvarez was that he and Golden Boy Promotions probably knew deep down inside that he could erase any mistakes he made during the fight with one punch. And that's a big reason why Khan was the opponent. Amir put up a good fight and definitely showed up to win and not just get paid. He also knew how to fight Alvarez and grasped what Saul's limitations were. His problem ended up being physics and physicality. His smart boxing and movement were simply short-circuited by Alvarez's overload in strength and punching power, assets that he's not going to automatically own as his career continues to progress.
Alvarez is a hard worker, he's a good not great two handed puncher, but he needs everything just right for him to be really effective. He’s sort of like an NFL quarterback who is great when he has time to throw and the field conditions are ideal. But then again there's the other guy who lives inside of him who is mistake-prone and comes undone if all is not in balance. That is somewhat the way I see Canelo as a fighter. He has two left feet if his opponent resists him and doesn’t cooperate…..but if they plant their feet and give him something to counter without movement, he's a very dangerous fighter.
Alvarez is a very tough guy, believe me, and I have no issue regarding his character and mental constitution. When he says he has no fear of Golovkin, I believe him. And from a style perspective, Golovkin will be less bothersome for him than Khan was. It's just that he has the same problem versus GGG that Khan had against him, and that is does he have the strength and power to keep Golovkin from overwhelming him? In addition to that, can he stand up to Gennady's full assault and have anything left to answer it with? That's how the bout will be decided, and as of this time I don't think he'll be able to stay with Golovkin. In actuality there isn't one thing he does better than GGG. The only question is whether he can last the distance with him.
Golovkin fights stylistically the way Canelo prefers his opponents to fight him. The problem, in all likelihood, is that Golovkin has too much strength and durability for him. I'd be surprised if they fought in their next fight, but that isn't because Alvarez fears him......it's more the case that he wants the fight to marinate a little more as we saw with Mayweather-Pacquiao.

If W. Klit pulls out of the fight against Fury
Who should be the replacement?
WK's wife had another mental breakdown and is away seeking treatment. It had a big effect on his performance last time this happened. He is smart he won't go into a fight like that again. Any distractions and the Dr will postpone or walkaway from the rematch.
Good luck to WK and his wife.

Floyd Mayweather: The McGregor Fight Is NOT A Rumor
By Adam Weiss/ Guest Colomnist
The initially-dismissed fantasy matchup between retired pound-for-pound Floyd Mayweather and UFC cash cow Conor McGregor could actually be real.
At least if were to believe Money Mayweather.
"It's possible, Mayweather said prior to Canelo-Khan. "It may not be a rumor. Keep your fingers crossed. It may be a boxer versus an MMA fighter. So we just don't know."
The two fighters are comparable in size, with McGregor campaigning at 145 (featherweight in the UFC) vs. Mayweather's 147.
And speaking of retirement, McGregor, 27, made his own share of headlines lately. He announced his retirement in tweet that went viral, went silent, unretired again (this time via Facebook), before getting yanked by UFC brass from a huge July PPV.
Never one to shy away from playing the media, McGregor posted a series of tweets hinting at the possible matchup.
While the idea was met with initial derisionUFC head honcho Dana White denied the fight, calling it a tabloid storyexperts are, somehow, warming up to the clash between the two biggest draws in each sport.
If [McGregor] can survive, he's not diminished too much. And Mayweather's not a murderous puncher, long-time analyst Joe Rogan said. He's not a Canelo Alvarez or Gennady Golovkin.
Golovkin is a bad fight for him. Someone like that is a bad fight for him, a murderous puncher, because most likely they're gonna take him out. But Mayweather, it's very possible he is gonna get the decision.
Of course, there are number of obstacles blocking the fight.
For one, the 39-year-old Mayweather, who capped a historic Hall of Fame career by shutting out former two-time welterweight titlist Andre Berto to secure his 49th consecutive victoryhas to unretire.
However, ESPNs Darren Rovell reported last week that Mayweathers promotional company had filed for trademarks for TMT 50 and TBE 50, adding fuel to the comeback rumor fire.
Then theres the matter of the UFC allowing McGregor to compete outside the UFC, notorious for its ironclad contracts against co-promotions.
I can't imagine they would be willing to do that, Rogan said on his podcast, and I can't imagine that they would let him fight Floyd Mayweather."
And of course the setting. Will it take place in a ring? A cage? The Pit?
But should the fight go down, as Mayweather says it may, it could satisfy his nine-figure requirement to leave the retired life behind.
"Every time I go out there and compete, my number is, of course, $100 million or better," Mayweather said. "I feel I can demand that."

Poignancy at T-Mobile
When Canelo went to his knees to check out the condition of Amir Khan, it was not the first time he had done this. When he almost killed James Kirkland with the same crushing right, he also showed genuine concern for his fellow-man. Saul Canelo Alvarez is a special kind of person.
But the real poignancy for me occurred when Referee Russell Mora looked at Glen Tapias corner and tapped his heart to acknowledge their decision to stop the slaughter being admonished by David Lemieux.
These kinds of things are often bypassed by the scribes but they send chills down my spine. They reflect another dimension to boxingone that is positive.

Return of Monster Inoue: Don't Blink
After slaughtering stiff opposition from the get-go, inactive Naoya “Monster” Inoue (only 9-0) returns this weekend to fight next victim David “Severo” Carmona (20-3-5) with the WBC World super flyweight title at stake. The fight will be in Tokyo at the Ariake Colosseum.
Naoya Inoue is a Japanese boxer; he is a former WBC Light flyweight champion and the current WBO Junior bantamweight champion.
One thing that bodes very ill for Carmona is that he was stopped by Omar Andres Narvaez in 2013, while “Monster” dispatched the same Narvaez (40-1 at the time) by KO in 2014. Thus far, the only fighter to go the distance against Inoue has been ultra-tough Ryoichi Taguchi (24-2-1) who is currently on a six-fight win streak.
In a battle between Mexico and Japan, the Japanese fighter will win this one quickly and decisively.
Here is why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U2mD34oJPo

"That's It. I Quit. It's Over. I'm retired." The Gibberish of Boxing.
Floyd Money Mayweather Jr. has maintained a high profile since defeating Andre Berto in September of 2015 in what was supposedly his farewell fight. This past Saturday, he let the cat out of the bag during an interview with veteran sportscaster Jim Gray, acknowledging that he had been in talks with CBS and Showtime about a possible return. Shortly thereafter, ESPN business reporter Darren Rovell revealed that Mayweather, 49-0, had applied for trademarks with the U.S. Patent Office for TMT 50 and TBE 50. The initials stand for The Money Team and The Best Ever.
To those well versed in the history of the sweet science, there was little doubt that Mayweathers career was unfinished. Theres an old boxing saw that says they always come back. A prominent boxer, contemplating retirement, thinks he has enough money to last the rest of his life, but a negative cash flow is a worm that will deplete his coffers. Beyond financial considerations, there are emotional factors that spur un-retirements. Adulation sustains a boxers vanity. When the cheers stop, the silence can be deafening.
Mayweather will inevitably win his next fight, and perhaps the fight after that, but comebacks rarely succeed. Father Time waits for no man, unless that man is George Foreman.
The final fights of some great champions were mournful occasions. In his next-to-last fight vs. Larry Holmes, Muhammad Ali was jeered. Sportswriters excoriated him for delivering such a hollow performance as if he had intentionally perpetrated a fraud on the public. Alexis Arguello was the epitome of a classy boxer. His final fight, in the ballroom of a little off-Strip casino in Las Vegas, was a sad spectacle. He lasted 10 rounds with no-name Scott Walker, but was a shell of the fighter that he had once been.
Alis conqueror, Larry Holmes, said that he would give the sport a few more years after upending Ken Norton in a scorching 15 round fight at Caesars Palace in 1978. A few more years turned into a few more decades. After several retirements, Holmes hung up his gloves for good in 2002.
The greatest boxer of them all, Sugar Ray Robinson, retired in 1952 after his famous fight with Joey Maxim, bidding adieu with a record of 137-3-2. In the written statement provided to the press, Robinson was adamant that he would never come back. My retirement, he said, is complete and unequivocal.
Robinsons future is set, said a reporter, noting that he owned a beer distributorship, a cabaret, a barbershop and a lingerie shop and was embarking on a career as a nightclub entertainer. But Robinson, a big spender with a big entourage (his personal barber traveled with him, just in case he was in the mood for a haircut), was hardly set for life. After a 30-month hiatus Robinson returned to the ring and plied his trade for another 13 years. He won 42 more fights (finishing 179-19-5), but paid the price. He suffered from Alzheimers disease in the years preceding his death at age 67.
When it came to reneging on vows of retirement, another Sugar Ray, Sugar Ray Leonard, was the crème-de-la-crème. There were six retirements, five rescinded, according to Bernard Fernandez who followed Leonards career closely. After winning the gold medal at the Montreal Olympics, Leonard vouched that he had no interest in turning pro. So, in a sense, even his first pro bout was prefaced by a retirement.
The list of prominent boxers who were unable to stay retired (invariably smudging their legacy), is a very long list. There are notable exceptions think Marciano, Hagler, Michael Spinks, and Lennox Lewis but they are in the minority.
Tyson Furys reaction to the Mayweather story was to create some retirement news of his own. I set off today for what promises to be a very hard eight weeks training, Fury wrote on twitter, referencing his forthcoming rematch with Wladimir Klitschko. This will be my best fight, then Ill retire 100 %.
Yes this tweet was newsworthy, at least from an economic standpoint. Tyson Fury, undefeated in 25 pro fights, is a star, especially in the U.K. Stories about Englands larger-than-life heavyweight champion sell newspapers and drive traffic to web sites. But the proper response to this news is a big horse laugh.
A.K.L.

Elijah Tillery taunted Riddick Bowe during their fight at the Convention Center and Big Daddy responded by flicking out a cheap shot jab which in turn was answered by Elijah who let go with at least two kicks to Bowes groin and shin area (one of which may had landed). An unscheduled brawl ensued and ended when Bowes diminutive manager Rock Newman appeared out of nowhere and put a stranglehold on Tillery from behind while Bowe pummeled Elijah as he disappeared from sight over the sagging ropes. The well-coordinated tag-team effort gave new meaning to a manager having his fighters back. Meanwhile, referee Karl Milligan appeared helpless and even hapless as the strange and hilarious events unfolded
This would not be the only bizarre moment in D.C. area boxing.

Is that incompetence or something else? Teddy Atlas asked during the televised fight.
I had just interviewed the affable and former champ Mighty Mike Anchondo for an online boxing site and was rooting for him against former amateur standout Darling Jimenez when they squared off at the DC Armory in Washington on April 27, 2007. Mike had lost his WBO super featherweight title to rugged Jorge Hyena Barrios. However, the hard hitting Jimenez proved too fast and too tough and took out Mike with a devastating left hook in the ESPN main event. Mike crashed to the deck face-first. He was counted out by referee Joseph Cooper (ring a bell?) at 2:05 of the third round. It was painful to witness, but what was far worse was that he was left on his stomach in a prone position unconscious and unattended for about 30 seconds before he received medical attention. That was ugly and inexcusable.
In keeping with the bizarre events taking place that night, there was the issue of the timekeeper. After Mike had been decked for the first time in round two, Jimenez was poised for the kill. One minute remained. However the bell rang, cheating Jimenez out of a full 60 seconds in which to end matters.
I also noted that the referee was wearing no gloves in the co-feature. Then, in an undercard bout, a fighter suffered a cut around the eye and the doctor in charge checked out the cut from several feet away.

The Washington officials once again distinguished themselves when they supported referee Malik Waleeds mindboggling ruling and held that the house fighter Ishmail The Arsenal Arvin beat the comebacking and far superior Anthony The Messenger Thompson by 4th round TKO. Thompson, who had floored Arvin twice and was comfortably ahead on the scorecards, had sustained a hideous cut over his eye that eventfully would prevent him from continuing.
The cut was caused by a headbutt in the third round. Everyone in the house and everyone watching on television knew it; that is, everyone but ringside officialseven though they saw it as plain as day on the ESPN replay. First, they were shown the clash of heads. Then they were shown the blood immediately flowing as a result of the clash. Two certainly follows one, doesnt it? Not in D.C. where they apparently believe in killing the messenger. To my profound disgust, the decision was left to stand. Waleed owns this one.

The televised fight between the UKs Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson was fought in front of a packed house at the Convention Center in D.C. After an extremely close, evenly matched fight for 12 rounds, the heavily pro-Peterson crowd was thrilled and pleasantly surprised by the split decision announced in Petersons favor. Khan scored a knockdown in the first round, but was penalized twice by home town Referee Joe Cooper, once for excessive shoving with the forearm and later for hitting on the break. The points proved to be the difference on the two scorecards that favored the hometown lad.
The performance of the unknown and untested referee, Joe Cooper, and the scores of the officials dominated the post-fight and threatened to ruin what had been a genuine slugfest.
It is strange that Khan committed the same foul in the final round and even stranger that the referee stopped the flow of a desperate and gripping last round to hand Khan the defeat. It was not a butt or intentional low blow or anything sinister. There just was no need. It was just plain wrong.
Amir Khan also claimed he saw an unidentified man who interfered with officials during his defeat by Lamont Peterson celebrating with the winner. On tape you see him around Petersons corner celebrating. Its bad for boxing we want fair fights and justice, said Khan

Prospect Prichard Colon fought Terrel Williams in what would become a nationally televised tragedy. Williams repeatedly grabbed Colon behind the head and targeted it for one blow after another. Colon kept complaining in the ring to referee Joe Cooper mostly to no avail.
Later, the highly touted Colon, who was being booed by the unsuspecting crowd, reportedly complained to his corner after the seventh frame of dizziness and while he was in his locker room shortly after the contest, he suffered from dizzy spells, vomited (always a dangerous sign) and then fainted. On-site paramedics immediately brought him to nearby Inova Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Va.
Here is the fight: http://ift.tt/1rdcO7Q
Colon slipped into a coma for one week but finally breathing on his own. His exact prognosis remains unclear

An embarrassment n the venue occurred later when local favorite and former 140-pound world champion Lamont Peterson, Anthonys brother, fought Felix Diaz, an opponent brought in for the hometown favorite to defeat but no one told Diaz, who clearly out boxed Lamont throughout most of the fight.. Yet Peterson somehow was awarded a majority decision. One judge, Dorothea Perry, scored the fight 117-111 in favor of Peterson. She should never be allowed near a boxing ring again.

Look at the ring, its full of blood.
But not my blood.-Luis Ortiz
The latest occurrence in the D.C. area involves the D.C. Boxing and Wrestling Commission investigating local D.C. judge Lloyd Scaife. In the bout in question, Luis Ortiz put a beating on another hometown guy, Tony Thompson, knocking him down in the first, third, and final rounds and thus getting two 10-8 rounds before the end. Scaife, however, had the fight 48-47 for Ortiz, scoring the first and third rounds 10-9. The two other official judges Tammye Jenkins and Paul Wallace both had Ortiz up on the cards 50-43 correctly reflecting the wipe-out and the two 10-8 rounds.
Scaife apparently does not believe in 10-8 rounds despite clean and crunching knockdowns. But what the heck, this is Washington, D.C. and strange things happen here in and around the square ring
