I try to catch every fight I possibly can in this sport because well you never know what will happen. Yesterday in Niagara Falls, NY on CBS Sports Network a swing bout made the air between Skender Halili (9-1, 9 KO's) and Jason Thompson (5-11-4, 5 KO's). On paper, it was a mismatch in favor of Halili and the expected result was for Halili to score a spectacular early ko.
He did and with a one punch knockout at the end of round 2.
But before that, Thompson had Halili down and nearly out in the 2nd. It was a brutal knock down and it did not look like Halili would last long. Halili gutted it out and slugged back with Thompson who was still getting the better of the exchanges. Thompson was credited with a 2nd knockdown when the ropes held Halili up later in the round. Again, the end appeared near for Halili. But he somehow regained his legs and sent Thompson down moments later with a right hand that clipped Thompson flush on the chin. It was a right hand that traveled no more than six inches but landed as Thompson was pressing forward launching his own right going for the finish himself. Thompson was out cold and the referee quickly waived the fight off.
This is why I watch every fight I can. You just never know in this sport what you will witness. This is one of the best rounds I have ever seen and would characterize it as a poor man's Corrales-Castillo round 10. In my opinion, this will be round of the year in 2016.
