Rumor is spreading through social media that Canelo's next opponent will be one Liam Smith (also known as "Beefy"). The date being mentioned is September 17th at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
Obviously this is not the fight we want. But Golden Boy is going to milk their lone cash cow as much as they can until they take another significant risk. And as I thought about it more, even names such as Lemiuex and Stevens made little sense as both bring too much risk (especially Lemiuex) along with too little reward. Actually, Lemiuex-Stevens is a rumored undercard bout for the PPV card.
Back to Beefy for a second... I have seen him fight and the most I can say about him is that he makes the most out of his abilities. He is solid and technically pretty sound. He is a good body puncher and I guess would best be described as a grinder. Smith is active and looks to break his opponents down with his activity as well as body punching as his fights progress. He also holds a belt, the WBO Light Middleweight Title, and a fight against Smith would probably be contested at 154 to help sell it better as a title fight.
Smith's record is 22-0 (1 early career draw in there too) with 12 ko's. He is not a big puncher at all. This of course lends all the more credence to him being mentioned as a Canelo foe. Smith's must notable win was against Boxcino winner John Thompson last year to win the WBO belt. Thompson's speed caused Smith trouble early but Thompson couldn't sustain an early frantic pace and essentially gassed out. Other than Thompson, really no notable name's on the Smith resume.
I will also say this about the rumored fight. If I were a matchmaker at Golden Boy looking at a list of possible opponents, Smith would be option A, B and C. As I said, he is not a big puncher at all. Also, though skilled is methodical and though not slow does not possess either quick feet or quick hands. Thompson found him an easy target and Thompson's hand speed caused Smith trouble in their fight. Canelo would have little trouble getting to Smith and breaking Brit down for what would probably be a dominant early to mid round stoppage.
This is what is going through the mill at the moment. It unfortunately from a fan's perspective is not that enticing a fight but from a business perspective in Golden Boy's eyes makes all the sense in the world at the moment.
