Hey guys

Hola Amigos,

I am a fellow fight fan (ok a nutcase that loves boxing a little too much). I go to a good amount of fights and never miss the televised ones. Happy to be here, I'm excited to chat some boxing with the fine folk of this forum. I was wondering if you guys could instruct me on how to put up a picture? As simple as it may sound and seem, after searching for a while the solution seems to allude me.

Thanks for any help - on with the boxing talk now.

Edner Cherry-Haskell Rhodes

Did anyone check out this fight last night on Fox Sports? I know it wasn't the most entertaining but am curious to hear how others scored the bout.

The announcers had Rhodes winning going away. The judges had it unanimous for Cherry by scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93. One of the judges who had it 97-93 was Steve Weisfeld who I think may be the top judge in the sport.

I had it 96-94. In my opinion, thru all the holding and grappling Cherry was landing cleaner and harder. Rhodes punches did not seem all that hard and crisp.

Interested to hear how others who watched felt about the scoring. I have no issues and think the right guy won. But the announcing crew sure did not think so.

R.I.P Jack Obermayer -- the hardest working scribe in the world of boxing

Largely because I live out west and he lived back east, I never had the privilege of meeting Jack Obermayer who passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 25, reportedly from liver cancer, at his home in Lindenwold, New Jersey.

I never met him, but over the years I met many who did and the mention of Obermayer's name invariably brought a twinkle to their eye and brought forth an amusing anecdote. Obermayer likely witnessed more fights from ringside than any person ever. If there was a little club show in some hardscrabble town off the beaten path and the roads were slippery because of a winter storm, Obermayer would have been there -- or so I was told.

In 2010, Bernard Fernandez, the president of the Boxing Writers Association of America, presented Obermayer with an award for long and meritorious service to boxing.

Fernandez is writing an obit that will tentatively arrive on our home page on Sunday evening or more likely Monday. I look forward to reading it and learning more about this cult figure.

HBO Needs to Bring Back the Original Boxing After Dark

HBO launched Boxing After Dark in February 1996 with the premise of making competitive action packed fights. It had a lower budget than the World Championship Boxing series but a budget that was strong enough to make good fights in which either fighter could realistically win. The results were of course incredible with many memorable fights and many enjoyable late nights for fights fans watching good boxing.

The premise of the series has slowly changed over its 20 plus years and now has become more or less a showcase stage for fighters. Felix Verdejo is the latest example of a fighter appearing on boxing after dark in fights well that he was very heavily favored and the show basically serving as a showcase for him instead of good competitive boxing.

HBO needs to go back to the roots of the series that began in 1996 and just make competitive fights. Maybe add in a little good matchmaking like the show had in its early years and not only can you get competitive fights but ones that are very entertaining with the potential for something special.

With that in mind, here are some low budget fights (one in each weight class) that HBO can realistically make and put on Boxing After Dark that will be competitive as well as fan friendly.

Heavyweight - Eric Molina vs. Andrey Fedosov - Competitive fight between two brawlers with the winner being positioned for a big shot in the division
Cruiserweight - Krzysztof Glowacki - Oleksandt Usyk - This fight is made and can be bought cheap. What the original Boxing After Dark was about
Light Heavyweight - Vyacheslav Shabranskyy - Sean Monaghan - Good action fight, winner would be natural for winner of Kovalev-Ward
Super Middleweight - Gilberto Ramirez - Rogelio Medina - Medina a punching machine, good test for Ramirez
Middleweight - Tureano Johnson - Curtis Stevens II - First fight entertaining and controversial, lets do it again.
Jr. Middleweight - Pablo Cesar Cano - Javier Prieto and pair with Yoshihiro Kamegai-Jesus Soto Karass II - All out wars, if this card happens I don't care where or how much I am there
Welterweight - Brandon Rios - Mike Alvarado IV - Okay three was bad but first two great; Alvarado rededicated and Rios coming back, why not?
Jr. Welterweight - Raymund Beltran - Adrian Granados - Good competitive action fight that wold have been perfect co-feature on any BAD card in 90's
Lightweight - Petr Petrov - Michael Perez - Another fight that would be a war; both face first come forward fighters who like to slug
Jr Lightweight - Jason Sosa - Takashi Miura - Styles make fights and these two would be in the trenches for 12 or less
Featherweight - Ronny Rios - Robinson Castellanos II - Rios much better since first fight, lot of intrigue and good fight
Jr. Featherweight - Diego De La Hoya - Alejandro Hernandez - Big test for De La Hoya, if he is the goods he passes; Hernandez much better than record

And finally skipping a few weight classes (would love HBO to venture for some fighters overseas in the smaller weights but probably not likely)

Flyweight - Roman Gonzalez - Juan Estrada II - Please HBO, please make this. It just common sense. A great doubleheader would be adding Brian Vilora-McWilliams Arroyo.

This is something like I want to see back from HBO. No more showcasing, time to bring back the original Boxing After Dark that fans loved. Did anyone see the buzz Soto Karass-Kamegai received this year? Boxing fans knew this would be good and did not care about the rankings, etc. It was just a great action fight on paper that lived up to all promises. HBO used to make these kind of fights and can do so again very easily. Most fights above are very economical and much better than say Kovalev-Chilemba, Ward-Brand, Verdejo-Silva, etc.

Kovalev vs. Ward is the Best that Boxing has to Offer

By Frank Lotierzo

Well, it looks as if boxing is going to realize, at least in my opinion, the most intriguing matchup that could be made in the sport, later this year when WBA/IBF/WBO light heavyweight title holder Sergey Kovalev 29-0-1 (26) will defend his belts against Andre Ward 29-0 (15) who is the former undisputed super-middleweight champ. Yes, Kovalev versus Ward in late 2016 is really that good. And the reason for that is - it's impossible to make an unbreakable case favoring one over the other.

With Muhammad Ali recently passing away, many boxing aficionados are reviewing his career and debating the highlights of his unparalleled tenure as the alpha fighter in the heavyweight division circa 1964-78. And when all is said and done, the most anticipated and biggest fight of Ali's life was his first meeting with "Smokin" Joe Frazier when neither he nor Joe had come close to losing a bout as the defending champion. What made Frazier vs. Ali so special is that it was impossible to envision either one of them as a loser, especially at the hands of the other on the morning of the bout.

No, I'm not saying that Kovalev and Ward are at that level because they’re not. As terrific as they've both been since they've become world class fighters, it's not like I can't imagine them losing. However, the intangibles surrounding them makes a match-up between them better than the pairing of any other two fighters in boxing at the moment.

A little over 13 months ago many fans were unfortunately duped, due to a six-year build up, into thinking that Floyd Mayweather fighting Manny Pacquiao was a once in a generation clash; and oh how wrong they were. By the time Floyd and Manny touched gloves, Mayweather was on the decline and Pacquiao was three bouts removed from suffering the worst loss and knockout defeat of his career. On May 2, 2015, it was not a reach picturing Mayweather being out-worked and out-hustled by a younger opponent, and in regards to Pacquiao, his defense and head movement was all but gone and he was no longer a non-stop attacker who brought the heat and pressure from bell-to-bell.

As a result of the letdown fans suffered after the Mayweather-Pacquiao waltz, they hitched their hopes on believing that a showdown between the universally acknowledged best 160 pound fighter in the world, Gennady Golovkin 35-0 (32), and the new biggest star in boxing Saul "Canelo" Alvarez 47-1-1 (33), would be everything that Mayweather-Pacquiao wasn't. Maybe a meeting between Golovkin and Alvarez would be all that, but I wholeheartedly believe the case favoring GGG over Canelo is overwhelming. In fact it's really hard to find a path to victory for Canelo. So in my view, other than seeing the names Golovkin and Alvarez paired together on a billboard, I just don't see where them fighting is such a big deal.

For a fight to be big and loaded with anticipation, especially if neither fighter is a superstar or major personality, it needs the element of intrigue as far as who is going to win or who should be favored. And that's what Kovaklev-Ward has in abundance. So much so that it's almost most impossible to give one a decided advantage over the other. Kovalev just turned 33 and looks to be peaking physically and emotionally; his confidence and total belief in himself couldn't be higher. From a technical vantage point, Sergey has an inside/outside game. He can control his opponents with his long left jab and uses it to steer them where he wants them to go. It's a hard punch and it keeps his opponent from taking serious runs at him while at the same time creates an opening for his right hand to sneak in behind it. And if his opponent allows him to close the distance and get close, Kovalev can fight on the inside and is very effective getting off with hard and accurate uppercuts and hooks in close quarters.

Andre Ward just turned 32 and hasn't lost as an amateur or pro in more than 12 years. Ward is a counter-puncher with underrated physical strength. And he just may be one of the most versatile, stylistically that is, fighters in boxing. Throughout the course of a fight, Andre sees what his opponent doesn't like to do or isn't good at, and then forces him to fight from his weakness. If Andre's opponent wants to assert himself and push the fight, he'll more than oblige him and in the midst counter the hell out of him until he’s dizzy from getting hit with shots he doesn’t see or doesn’t appear to look like much. On the other hand, if he's in with fighters who want to use the ring and pick their spots, he's quite capable of taking away the distance and space they need to be effective. To better Ward, you better be more than a puncher, and if you think you can out-box him, he'll foul you and beat you up to the point to where his foe might think he's fighting two men at the same time.

It may be an old cliche in boxing, but neither Kovalev nor Ward has shared a ring with anybody like they're going to see this coming November. For every case pointing to Kovalev, there is a counter one pointing to Ward. Both fighters really want the fight because legacies are on the line and the winner will be the most celebrated fighter in professional boxing immediately after the bout. This isn't like Mayweather-Pacquiao where the argument before the bout was which one of them had slipped the least. Actually, the biggest unknown pertaining to either fighter is that Ward is coming off a layoff in which he's only fought two times since 2013. On the other hand, like it was with Joe Frazier before he fought Ali the first time, Kovalev has been fighting and cleaning out the division pretty steadily for the past three years.

Both fighters will fight once more before they meet, Kovalev in July and Ward in August. You can bet your mortgage money on them both winning. And then it's on to the best fight that can be made in boxing...Kovalev vs. Ward. No, they're not the biggest stars in the sport, but they are authentically two of the best fighters in it. One of them, Kovalev, is no doubt in his prime and the other, Ward, may be on the slight decline. However, he was so terrific during his prime that even if he lost a smidgen of what he once was, he's still very capable of winning.

Their names on the marquee don't have the sizzle that a mantle with Mayweather or Alvarez across it would have, but Kovalev vs. Ward is the best fight between two unbeaten world class fighters that boxing has to offer, and I defy anyone to pronounce that one should be a predominant favorite over the other.

Regarding Golovkin vs. Alvarez, I ask how can a fight be so big and anticipated when virtually everyone agrees who the winner will be? That's what the case would be if Golovkin fought Alvarez, but this certainly won’t be the situation when Kovalev and Ward finally touch gloves. It won't be hard finding someone to bet against without giving odds when they meet.

Eddie Hearn "PED Testing on the night of the fight is a waste of time"

This weekend, British promoter Eddie Hearn has booked the O2 Arena in London for an event headlined by a heavyweight world title fight between Brit Anthony Joshua (16-0) and American Dominic Breazeale (17-0).

Picture: Eddie Hearn is a second generation promoter. Here he is pictured with father, Barry.

Hearn, already the most prolific promoter in England, is eager to promote Joshua all over the world, as he revealed on a Monday conference call for Showtime, Hearn accompanied Joshua on the call to hype this weekend's fight, and in response to a question from the media, Joshua stated he would love to fight in the United States. Hearn elaborated that Joshua has already been fielding offers from around the world, including some far off locations such as China and The United Arab Emirates, and that he fully expected to have Joshua fight stateside sometime in 2017.

Joshua and Hearn were eventually asked about the recently cancelled Deontay Wilder versus Alexander Povetkin heavyweight title bout and about PED use in boxing in general, and as expected both men came out strongly against there use. The two gave details on the drug testing system used by the British Boxing Board of Control, endorsing it a the most advanced system anywhere.

Anthony Joshua is subject to year round random drug tsting by the BBBofC. He has signed up for a program that asks him to report his daily whereabouts at all times, including what gyms he is training at and where he is sleeping, and agents can appear at any time to request a sample to be tested. Joshua mentioned that the program is probably state funded, at which point Hearn elaborated.

Hearn stated that the system is funded by the British Boxing Board of Control, and that in a recent test they showed up at 10 o'clock at night to test Joshua.

"Testing on the night of the fight is useless" Hearn stated. He went on to add that it is "the safest system, Random testing is the only way to eradicate cheating in the sport."

Listen to the entire conference call at The Boxing Channel.

"Cheating has become advanced, and when you have as much money at stake as there is in boxing you will always find a bad soul...the UK doping system is probably the only system world wide where we have complete faith that all championship fighters over here have been randomly tested throughout camp." Hearn stated.

The problem with boxing in America is there is no universal commission, all the commissions have different policies. The BBBofC has complpete control as an independent agency and they enforce a system where fighters are randomly tested. In my opinion that system needs to be employed in the United States of America universally around the commisions, to catch people."

In the United States only certain commissions, such as the Nevada State commission and the bodies that govern New York, California, New Jersey and perhaps one or two other states have shows big enough to generate the funds necessary for this type of system. Could the surplus money generated by the big commissions go to fund a national system of random testing in the United States? Nevada made millions in fees off the last several "Canelo" and Floyd Mayweather fights, where does all that surplus money go? And woud it not be better served funding a national system?

Check out The Boxing Channel video featuring former 2 division world champion and analyst extraordinaire Paulie Malignaggi as he breaks down then heavyweight prospect Anthony Joshua. (from Dec. 2015)

Hanna Gabriels: Boxing's Best Female Combatant Will be in Action

June 18 Venezuela Hanna Gabriels vs Katia Alvarino for the vacant 154 pound title. Hanna's development is nothing short of astounding. She's starting to hurt men in the gym. It is my opinion that she's on pace to exceed Lucia Rijker, the finest fighter the women's side has yet to produce. I get that overcoming the accomplishments of Rijker will be boxing's equivalent to climbing Mt Everest, but Gabriels possesses an inner drive I find refreshing. A lot of what she has learned has been self taught, trial-n-error stuff, much like many of the women out there who must make do with a second tier trainer. Just for the record, that's not necessarily a knock on third world trainers. It's not easy improving at your craft when no blank canvasses are walking through the front door. And when they do walk through the front door, there's nobody to match them with in sparring or actual fights.

Watch Gabriels in action tomorrow evening. Then tell me what you think.

Lastly, yes, I have a small say in her career, but would never put my seal of approval on a fighter as being special unless I truly believed that fighter was indeed special. Fellas, feel free to watch this fight and grade me accordingly.

Prediction: If they were three minutes per round I would say a 4th round stoppage. But because they are two minute rounds, she'd have to hurt Alvarino early in a round to get her out of there. Gabriels TKO 7

The Mares-Cuellar Fight Has Been Cancelled

Abner Mares has been forced to pull out of his June 25 bout with Jesus Cuellar. The fight, which was to be the CBS televised appetizer to the Thurman-Porter showdown, was for Cuellar's WBA World featherweight title.

On Friday afternoon June 17, at approximately 1 PM ET, DiBella Entertainment released this statement:

"Regrettably, due to a medical issue that renders former three-division world champion Abner Mares presently unable to fight in New York State, the Cuellar vs. Mares fight has been cancelled....Abner's condition is in no way life-threatening, nor was it revealed in a blood or urine test, there was no use of any drugs, including PEDs or other banned substances. In honoring Abner's right to medical confidentiality, no further information will be released on this situation unless he chooses."

The search for a suitable replacement fight has already begun.

Is Boxing at ESPN Coming to an End?

Last May, Friday Night Fights on ESPN came to an end. It was sad as the series that ran for 17 years and more or less replaced USA's Tuesday Night Fights as boxing's only weekly series came to a close. But there was hope that the relaunch of ESPN boxing with the PBC would usher in a new era of bigger fights on the network. The "monthly" series promised better fights with bigger names.

Well we did get Santa Cruz-Mares last August. Also, Thurman-Collazo, Garcia-Malignaggi, Alexander-Martinez and Lara-Zaveck. With the exception of Santa Cruz-Mares, with each telecast came well down in quality from its predecessor.

After Lara-Zaveck just before Thanksgiving last year, the network went silent on televised until two weeks ago. It came back with a mismatch on paper and in the ring on a late telecast on east coast between Artur Beterbiev and Ezequiel Maderna. That telecast also went head to head with the much more anticipated HBO card that night between Francisco Vargas and Orlando Salido.

This week ESPN announced its next three fight cards this summer. Jamal Herring vs. Denis Shafikov (not a bad fight actually but not the high quality upper level main event we were promised), upcoming prospect Mario Barrios vs veteran Devis Boschiero (showcase fight for Barrios) and Sergey Lipinets vs Walter Castillo (interesting crossroads fight which would be good opener to a telecast).

Also, Sergiy Derevyanchenko is scheduled to fight the always exciting Sam Soliman later in July (not the sarcasm).

These are not near the quality of cards that were expected and hoped from ESPN and PBC. As a matter of fact, we are going back to the kind of quality we used to see on Friday Night Fights. The differences...well for one its not weekly and also completely controlled by the PBC. Remember, Friday Night Fights was not only a boxing's fan only weekly series but also kept so many different promoters afloat over the years.

It seems to me that ESPN is winding down its live televised coverage in boxing. They have a buy time deal with Haymon and well want to get their money so are going forward with these shows. But it sure appears they are mailing it in on the sport.

And what would be the big reason? Well, UFC could be coming. It has been widely reported that multiple parties are interested in the 4 plus billion dollar price tag to purchase UFC. For that money, whoever purchases it needs big television contracts. ESPN has been expanding its UFC coverage and would seem a natural. Of course, this would be a boxing's expense.

I hope I am wrong. But what has occurred since PBC took out Friday Night Fights has not been positive for boxing on ESPN and looks to potentially have drove the nail in the coffin in the sport on the network.

2017 Boxing Hall of Fame Class

I am just getting back from another fun filled Boxing Hall of Fame weekend in Canastota. This is definitely the one weekend I look most forward to every year. My wife told me I looked like a kid at Christmas Thursday morning as I was itching to leave and get on the road to Canastota.

Anyway, as I am back I got to thinking about the class of 2017. I do not know if this is 100% accurate of or not but from my research I see three names that I believe will be on the ballot for the first time that should be locks to get in.

Evander Holyfied
Marco Antonio Barrera
Johnny Tapia

If I am correct, this would push back the time frame for others deserving but not yet voted in like Veeraphol Sahaprom who I thought should have been voted in this year. A class with the three names above though will of course be very strong and garner a lot of attention. As always regardless of of is voted in, it will be another fun filled weekend in Canastota and one that if you haven't attended I would highly recommend doing so.

Deontay Wilder's Next Title Defense Will Be Against Chris Arreola

According to various news outlets, WBC World heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) will defend his title against Chris Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) on July 16 at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. Wilder was scheduled to fight Alexander Povetkin in a mandatory title defense on May 21 in Moscow, but that match was scuttled when Povetkin tested positive for the banned drug meldonium. The WBC, which is still investigating the matter, ruled that Wilder was entitled to a voluntary defense until things were sorted out.

The 30-year-old Wilder, born and raised in Tuscaloosa, made his first two title defenses in his home state, dismissing outclassed Eric Molina and Johann Duhaupas here in Birmingham.

Chris Arreola, born in Los Angeles, resides in the southern California community of Escondido. This will be his second stab at the WBC World heavyweight title. In 2009, he was stopped in 10 rounds by Vitali Klitschko. The 35-year-old, 6’3” Arreola has had weight issues in the past, but came in a relatively trim 236 ½ pounds for his last outing on Dec. 12 when he met Travis Kauffman in a 12-round contest at San Antonio. Arreola got off the deck to win a narrow decision, but the verdict was changed to “no contest” when he tested positive for marijuana. Arreola also tested positive for marijuana in July of 2011 after winning a lopsided decision over Friday Ahunanya at Atlantic City. The man likes his weed.

It will be interesting to see how this new development sits with Alexander Povetkin’s Russian promoter Andrey Ryabinsky. On May 30, Povetkin’s management issued a press release saying that new tests taken after the Wilder-Povetkin match was cancelled proved that the boxer was clean. Ryabinsky threatened to sue the testing agency and everyone in the media that assailed Povetkin for being a cheater.

Notwithstanding his impressive record, Deontay Wilder has yet to fight a top-shelf opponent. Chris Arreola isn’t ranked in the top 15 by any of the major sanctioning bodies. Unconfirmed rumors have the Wilder-Arreola match being televised on FOX.

Muhammad Ali's Memorial Service. What Were Your Reactions?

Just got finished watching the Muhammad Ali memorial service which started an hour later than advertised and was expected to run about two hours. It was obvious early on that it was going to drag on beyond the allotted time when U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch from Utah made his long-winded eulogy. Wow, that speech could have been a lot tighter.

I was moved by many parts of the service. I think some of Ali's charisma rubbed off on his widow Lonnie. I never knew she was so eloquent. I loved the line when she referenced Joe Martin, Ali's first boxing coach: "America should never forget that when a cop and an inner city kid talk to each other, miracles can happen."

Interested in your impressions, but please let's restrict your thoughts to the civilians that spoke, leaving the clerics from the various faiths out of it.

Among the celebrities from the world of sports that were reportedly in the audience: George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, Don King, Bob Arum, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Beckham, Pat Riley, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

By the way, in the speech reportedly written by President Obama, delivered through an emissary, they re-retold an anecdote that appeared in Jerry Izenberg's column six days ago. The journalist in me thinks they should have acknowledged the source.

Muhammad Ali's Memorial Service. What Were Your Reactions?

Today in Boxing History: The Original Muhammad Ali Dies

Exactly 70 years ago today in 1946, Jack Johnson (who some call the original Muhammad Ali) dies in a car accident in North Carolina. America's first black heavyweight champion of the boxing world, Johnson faced overt racism and daily discrimination throughout his troubled life and times, ultimately resulting in exile from his own country. You see, unlike Ali, Johnson went with white women and this infuriated white men. An international boxing hall of famer and an American original, Johnson still stands convicted of race crimes. His family still awaits a Presidential pardon. President Barack Obama gave an excellent speech commemorating the life of Muhammad Ali this week. Pardoning Jack Johnson would be an ideal way to honor both revolutionary black lives before leaving the White House. Rest in Peace great champions.

Belt holder Wilder to fight Arreola.

The limited Wilder is cherry picking again. Instead of fighting the decent Russian because of a few microns of something or other, he is fighting fat, out of shape, washed up, twice suspended for drugs, most recently in his last fight, lazy, drunk 300lb Arreola.

Belt holder a Wilder is a manufactured champ dreamed up in the mind of shadow and possible transhuman Haymon.

Fat Areeola is rewarded with a good payday after failing the drug test in his last fight.

Wilder as the so called champion hurts boxing and drives fans away.

The guy will still be fighting bums in 2 years from now with his feeble minded fans claiming he still needs tube ups.

Muhammad Ali & The Ever Lasting Legacy Of “New-Age-Ali-Social-Zeitgeisism” - Final Thoughts On A Real Legend, Champion, and King.

There’s no doubt that Muhammad Ali special.

It's rare to get such a wide/positive consensus on anything these days.

Let alone about a particular celebrity and/or sportsperson; and Ali was both.

It's even harder to get such a wide/positive consensus on a boxer.

As we are a fickle bunch of fans, spectators, and supporters.

Yet Ali not only;

A) Almost always received that consensus.

B) But he also (deservingly) held onto it for several decades.

Decades that crossed over and transcended way past the closure of his actual boxing career.

That’s almost unheard of in this sport.

Amazing stuff.

As negatively prophetic and as unbelievable as it may sound, I was pretty sure Ali would pass this year.

For a year or so now (stating last year) I had felt that this big/sad event was near and in a strange - but also visionary and euphoric kind of way I prepared for it by both thinking a lot about Ali, and by also trying to acknowledge why it was that he had that impact on me.

I mean, I never met the guy.

And, no, I don't think he's the best ever heavyweight either (in the top 5 or 10 for sure).

Furthermore, I also know he was not all the flowers and grace (who is?) he was sometimes made out to be.

So (you could say) why bother then; with all the psychological preparation?

For a while I didn't even know why I bothered, and it was a mystery; as I just felt it and as such didn’t question it.

Then I realized that Ali was probably one of the main reasons I;

A) Not only thought boxing was great and stayed with it.

B) But also (and perhaps more interestingly) I realised (maybe for the first time in my life) that Ali himself was most likely the first real/great influence for me as to why it's important to always stand up for what you believe in against the odds and stay true to yourself.

The fact that - against what surely must have been immense pressure from the best part of America and also perhaps even many other countries - Ali stood up for (extremely unpopular) things that he, deep in his heart, knew to be true and just, actually meant more to me and had a far greater impact on my life than his boxing achievements; even though his boxing achievements themselves also served to influence, *teach, and motivate.

*I mean, just from watching Ali, I learned how to throw a sneaky lead right hand (with and without the shoulder and/or hips) whilst walking backwards.

It’s not a bad trick to have in your toolkit.

No matter which way you roll or spin it, Ali was a pretty special guy, celebrity, and sportsman.

Very few boxers experience what it is like to go to the Olympics, and even fewer can say they were awarded a medal there.

Ali was awarded a gold medal in the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Not many people get to fight the murderers row of opponents that Ali did and still become a successful professional heavyweight boxing champion (multiple times); whilst also being the peoples champion (all the time).

Ali did.

Not many people - regardless of sporting code - get to be the living embodiment of what "champion” means; Ali did.

I read somewhere, years ago, that a survey concluded that when people say or hear the word “champion”, and then get asked to choose a sporting hero that best represents that; most say "Ali".

Ali (I believe) is one of the main reasons tennis players (and other no-combat sporting codes) gesticulate punching movements in the air when they are successful and/or under pressure.

The indoctrination we all gladly received from Ali as he loudly transcended through his careers as a celebrity and fighter, brashly carving out his own brand of “Ali-Social-Zeitgeisism”, is hard (if not impossible) to deny.

His mesmerizing ability to achieve and influence didn’t stop there though . .

Even if it did take a while to come to fruition; not many people get to prove America was wrong with their ideals about war; let alone that and also mandatory enrolment.

Talk about rage against the machine!

Think about it.

I mean . . heck, even president Obama failed just with his (admirable but arguably far easier to achieve) anti-gun stance.

Yet, Ali did all of the above together; whilst also setting in stone his place as an all time great in (and out of) one of the most difficult and treacherous sports.

It really warrants a pause for thought doesn’t it?

Who usually achieves half, let alone all, of this?

When considered in these contexts (and I hope you all agree with me) I believe - provided the comparison could be uncontroversially made and not shot down before it got off the ground and achieved escape velocity - you could make a case for Ali overtaking Elvis Presley.

I know for certain, in my mind, stellar celebrity and performing greats such as the Beatles and Michael Jackson certainly trail in Ali’s wake.

And then you have how humble, playful, wise, kind, selfless, and completely accessible he was in his later years.

During torment and torture that many would have justifiably behaved in the opposite to what Ali did, given the disease that ravaged him.

So many positive things to take from him; and I didn't even know him.

Now, that's amazing.

As far as I am concerned (and Storm is always concerned about anything to do with boxing) Ali was, and will still continue to be for years to come;

1) A statesman for the importance of independent thinking.

2) A symbol of how socially-transformative success in this sport can be.

3) An example of what self belief combined with progressive ideology can achieve and also how powerful it can become to move others when shaped correctly.

4) A social commentator on visions with unparalleled capacity to formulate solutions and opinions that - particularly when coupled with breathtaking sporting performances that demonstrated Ali’s trademark combination of unwavering self belief and “win at all costs” attitude - evolved into historically significant sociological benchmarks that were so powerful they dominated communal beliefs and ideals to the extent that they;

A) Didn’t just temporarily change cultural thoughts on important subjects in a way where it was all forgotten the next day; as is with most social principles and movement oriented trends that cut against the democratic grain of planned mediocrity.

B) As, what Ali had to say . . also ushered in a new and persistent way for the masses to engage in pensive thought on matters that impacted their daily lives and futures; and in this way Muhammad Ali ultimately defined a new philosophical ideology for society to use in areas it had previously been told by the government-war-machine, not to ever question.

And, also (last but not least; point 5) . . .

5) Ali was quite literally (and in a context that escapes simple copyright considerations) a living trademark whose unique life experiences not only evolved to be representative of what most aspire for - but they also gave rise to many of the inspiring terms and colloquiums that we lesser folks today currently use to describe impossible dreams, sporting stars and also the dangerous and dark spaces they toil in to achieve greatness.

So, yes, Muhammad Ali was (and is) special.

Amazing stuff.

With such an incredible and unparalleled body of work, who can say Muhammad Ali is not - even now - the living embodiment of what it means to be a “Legend”, “Champion”, and “King”.

Rest easy champ, king, and legend, as you and your achievements will remain unsurpassed and echo through eternity for a long time yet.

Storm.

Boxing is alive and well across the pond

The following are champions from an area where the population is not all that big:

Tyson Fury, linear heavyweight

Anthony Joshua, IBF heavyweight

Tony Bellew, WBC cruiserweight

Liam Smith, WBO junior-middleweight

James DeGale, IBF super-middleweight

Billy Joe Saunders, WBO middleweight

Kell Brook, IBF welterweight

Ricky Burns, WBA super-lightweight

Terry Flanagan, WBO lightweight

Anthony Crolla, WBA lightweight

Lee Selby, IBF featherweight

Lee Haskins, IBF bantamweight

Jamie McDonnell, WBA bantamweight

With sage matching--- and with Luke Campbell, Chris Eubank, Stephen Smith, and David Haye lurking and Khan still viable, albeit perhaps in the Olympics, the number could even grow or at the least remain intact.

And with the UK, unlike the US, slapping stiff penalties on dopers like Kid Galahad, boxing is alive and well across the pond as perhaps never before.

Street Brawler Turned MMA Star Kimbo Slice (7-0 as a conventional boxer) Dead at age 42

Kimbo Slice, a former strip club bouncer who attracted attention by videotaping street fights on "you tube," has reportedly died at age 42. Although unofficial, his death appears to have been caused by a heart attack. A father of six, he was living with his girlfriend in Coral Springs, Florida.

Born Kevin Ferguson in the Bahamas, Slice's fame out-stripped his talent. His first MMA fight, ostensibly an exhibition, came in 2007 when he opposed 46-year-old Ray Mercer, the former WBO heavyweight champion. In his first fight under the auspices of MMA powerhouse UFC he was defeated by Roy Nelson. He had one more fight under their banner before the UFC cut him loose. In 2015, he joined UCF rival Bellator MMA. He was scheduled to fight in July on a Ballator fight card in London.

Kimbo was undefeated in seven conventional boxing matches with six stoppages. However, he opposed only one fighter with a winning record, that being 40-year-old Howard Jones who sported a 5-4 record but had a 4-fight losing streak. Like many of Kimbo Slice's fights in both combat sports, there was a bad odor to it.

Following his last MMA fight in Texas, Slice tested positive for anabolic steroids and an elevated testosterone ratio.

Hey Weight, What's The Catch?

Two years ago today in NYC, Miguel Cotto hijacked the World Middleweight Championship in an "economically correct" business arrangement with hobbled outgoing champion Sergio Martinez. It's been all downhill since at the expense of, and to the exclusion of, Gennady Golovkin; the real undisputed middleweight champion and top P4P fighter on the planet. Maravilla was a great World Middleweight Champion who respected THE title right up until such time as he sold it out to Cotto at 159 pounds. Cotto lost it to Canelo at a catchweight after defending it at a catchweight. Canelo now reigns at 155 pounds, dropping his claim to the middleweight championship to duck GGG after dropping Amir Khan. The craziest part? Some boxing media, like the compromised American mainstream media, will tell you Canelo is THE champion and Triple G is NOT!

Welcome to boxing bizarro world.
