June 18 Venezuela Hanna Gabriels vs Katia Alvarino for the vacant 154 pound title. Hanna's development is nothing short of astounding. She's starting to hurt men in the gym. It is my opinion that she's on pace to exceed Lucia Rijker, the finest fighter the women's side has yet to produce. I get that overcoming the accomplishments of Rijker will be boxing's equivalent to climbing Mt Everest, but Gabriels possesses an inner drive I find refreshing. A lot of what she has learned has been self taught, trial-n-error stuff, much like many of the women out there who must make do with a second tier trainer. Just for the record, that's not necessarily a knock on third world trainers. It's not easy improving at your craft when no blank canvasses are walking through the front door. And when they do walk through the front door, there's nobody to match them with in sparring or actual fights.
Watch Gabriels in action tomorrow evening. Then tell me what you think.
Lastly, yes, I have a small say in her career, but would never put my seal of approval on a fighter as being special unless I truly believed that fighter was indeed special. Fellas, feel free to watch this fight and grade me accordingly.
Prediction: If they were three minutes per round I would say a 4th round stoppage. But because they are two minute rounds, she'd have to hurt Alvarino early in a round to get her out of there. Gabriels TKO 7
