if you find yourself in Guadalajara this weekend, you might want to check out the boxing show at the Arena Coliseo. Than again you might not.
The main go pits Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. against Hector Bobadilla for something called the WBC interim Fecombox featherweight title. Gonzalez is legit. He went 12 rounds with Carl Frampton and performed well in a losing effort. Bobadilla is a different story. He's 9-14, has defeated only two opponents with winning records, has lost five of his last seven, and has been stopped six times.
How could the WBC certify a fighter like Bobadilla to a fight for a title, no matter how insignificant? How could they not? This is the WBC.
The co-feature, a 10-round heavyweight fight, is even more interesting. It pits 40-year-old Owen "What the Heck" Beck against a local man, 39-year-old Ignazio Esparza.
Beck has fought several of the bigger names in the division, including Deontay Wilder, but he last fought in 2012 and has lost eight straight with only one of these bouts going the distance, that a 4-round affair with a raw novice. As for Esparza, his last meaningful bout was in 2010 when he ventured to Russia and was knocked out in four rounds by Denis Lebedev. Since that bout, where he weighed 199 pounds, his midsection has expanded. He carried 253 1/2 pounds for his next bout after Lebedev.
So if you happen to be in Guadalajara, check it out. Or don't.
